Actor: Sophia Loren

Sophia Loren won Best Actress for Two Women, the first performer to win the category for a non-English-language performance, playing a mother in wartime Italy in a role of considerable brutality.

She worked internationally in El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire and Marriage Italian Style, and was among the most photographed women of the century.

She grew up in poverty near Naples during the war, which she has connected directly to the Two Women performance, and received an honorary Academy Award in 1991.
