River Phoenix was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at eighteen for Running on Empty, playing the son of fugitive radicals, and Stand by Me had already made him known.
My Own Private Idaho is the achievement, playing a narcoleptic hustler, and the campfire scene was substantially written by him.
He played the young Indiana Jones in The Last Crusade. He died of a drug overdose in 1993 at twenty-three, having largely concealed his use, and his brother Joaquin was present.
