Actor: Richard Harris

Richard Harris was nominated for This Sporting Life and The Field, both playing physically enormous men whose inarticulacy is the tragedy.

He was part of a generation of Irish and British drinkers alongside O’Toole and Burton, and had a top ten single with MacArthur Park, which he sang despite not being a singer.

Unforgiven, Gladiator and the first two Harry Potter films gave him a substantial late career, and he took Dumbledore at the insistence of his granddaughter. He died in 2002.
