Richard Attenborough acted for decades, including Brighton Rock and The Great Escape, before directing, and spent twenty years trying to finance Gandhi, which finally won him Best Director and Best Picture.
As a performer his best late role is John Hammond in Jurassic Park, played with a warmth the novel’s version does not have.
He directed Cry Freedom, Shadowlands and A Bridge Too Far, and ran BAFTA and several British film institutions. His brother David is the naturalist.
