Carrie (1976)
Brian De Palma's 1976 King adaptation. Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, John Travolta supporting.
Piper Laurie was nominated for The Hustler, Carrie and Children of a Lesser God, spread across twenty-five years.
She left acting entirely for fifteen years after The Hustler, working as a sculptor and political activist, and returned for Carrie, in which she plays a religious fanatic mother with a conviction that makes the film work. Twin Peaks gave her a strange late role including an extended disguise as a Japanese businessman.
