O J Simpson was one of the greatest running backs in American football history before taking film work, largely in supporting roles.
The Naked Gun films gave him Nordberg, a police officer subjected to escalating physical injury, and The Towering Inferno and Capricorn One gave him earlier parts.
He was acquitted of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman in 1995 in a trial that dominated American media, and was later found liable in a civil suit. He served nine years for an unrelated armed robbery.
