Natalie Wood was a working child actor from four, in Miracle on 34th Street, and was nominated three times before turning twenty-five.

Rebel Without a Cause, Splendor in the Grass and West Side Story are the essential ones, and The Searchers gave her the object of the entire film’s obsession.

She drowned in 1981 at forty-three in circumstances that remain officially unresolved, with the case reopened decades later. She has been the subject of considerably more speculation than analysis of the work.
