Melina Mercouri starred in Topkapi and Never on Sunday, the second bringing an Academy Award nomination. She was stripped of Greek citizenship by the military junta for her opposition to it, and later served as Greece’s Minister of Culture, campaigning for the return of the Parthenon marbles.
