Meg Ryan was the dominant romantic comedy performer of the late 1980s and 1990s, in When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, and the deli scene is the most reproduced comic moment of the period.

Courage Under Fire and In the Cut show a different register, the latter deliberately against type and poorly received. Press coverage of her personal life around 2000 was hostile and the career declined sharply afterward. She has directed two films.
