Vampires (1998)
John Carpenter turns vampire hunting into blue-collar work and James Woods carries the whole film. Not a calling, not a tragic destiny, not a brooding romance with the dark.

Maximilian Schell won Best Actor for Judgment at Nuremberg, playing a defence counsel arguing that German judges were bound by the law they served, and the film gives him the argument at full strength.
He was nominated twice more, for The Man in the Glass Booth and Julia, and directed several films including a documentary about Marlene Dietrich in which she refused to be filmed.
He was Austrian, worked in German, French and English, and his sister Maria Schell was also a major European star.
