Marilyn Monroe was a considerably better comic actor than the mythology allows, and Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are the evidence. She formed her own production company in 1955 to escape a studio contract, which was an unusual act for a performer at that point. Her death in 1962 at thirty-six remains among the most examined in American culture.
