Marcello Mastroianni was nominated three times for Best Actor, all for Italian-language films, which is rare.
La Dolce Vita and 8½ made him Fellini’s surrogate, and in both he plays a man of enormous charm who cannot decide anything. Divorce Italian Style gives him a moustache and a murder plot, and he worked constantly across European cinema for four decades. He publicly rejected the idea that he was a Latin lover, calling it lazy.
