Lorne Greene played the patriarch in Bonanza for fourteen seasons and had earlier been Canada’s most recognisable radio newsreader, nicknamed the Voice of Doom for wartime bulletins. Earthquake and Battlestar Galactica gave him further screen work, and he had a number one country single.
