Lionel Barrymore won Best Actor for A Free Soul and played Mr Potter in It’s a Wonderful Life, one of American cinema’s most complete villains, delivered largely from a wheelchair he used in life due to arthritis and injury. He came from the Barrymore theatrical family and played Scrooge on radio annually for twenty years.
