Jean Seberg starred in Breathless, and the American accent in French made her a symbol of the New Wave. She was targeted by an FBI campaign over her support for the Black Panther Party, which included planting a false pregnancy story in the press, and her death in 1979 followed years of harassment she attributed to it.
