James Dean made three films and died at twenty-four, and was nominated posthumously for two of them, East of Eden and Giant, which no one else has managed. Rebel Without a Cause gave him the role that fixed the persona, and the combination of that death and that small body of work has kept him a permanent adolescent figure.
