Throne of Blood (1957)
Kurosawa's 1957 Macbeth set in feudal Japan. The arrow finale is among the most committed practical-effects sequences ever filmed.
Isuzu Yamada worked from the early 1930s across six decades and appeared for Mizoguchi, Ozu and Kurosawa.
Throne of Blood gives her Asaji, the Lady Macbeth figure, played using Noh theatre technique with a near-motionless face and a gliding walk, and the hand-washing scene is genuinely disturbing because of how little she does. Yojimbo gives her a very different role as a scheming brothel keeper.
