Escape from New York (1981)
Escape from New York is John Carpenter's dystopian action film and one of the foundational works of 1980s post-apocalyptic cinema. Carpenter directed and co-wrote with Nick Castle.
Isaac Hayes won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the theme from Shaft, the first Black composer to win in that category. Escape from New York gave him the Duke of New York, and South Park gave him Chef until he left over the show’s treatment of Scientology.
