Alien, Repo Man, Escape from New York and Wild at Heart made him a fixture, and he had the useful quality of appearing to have been defeated by something long before the film began.

Lucky, made when he was ninety, was his final lead and is effectively a summation, playing a man confronting mortality with no comfort available.

He was a serious musician, played in bars into his eighties, and was famously friendly with Jack Nicholson and Bob Dylan.
