Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu invented vampire cinema and still frightens a century later. The estate sued anyway and won, and a court ordered every copy destroyed.

Gustav von Wangenheim played Hutter in Nosferatu and later became a committed communist, emigrating to the Soviet Union and then returning to East Germany, where he ran the Deutsches Theater and directed films.
