Actor: Gunnar Bjornstrand

Gunnar Björnstrand appeared in more than twenty Ingmar Bergman films, which makes him the director’s most frequent collaborator.

The Seventh Seal gives him the squire Jöns, whose cynicism is the counterweight to the knight’s spiritual anguish and who gets all the good lines. Winter Light gives him a pastor who has lost his faith and continues to conduct services anyway, which is the harder performance. He worked from the 1930s into the 1980s.
