Gian Maria Volontè played the antagonist in A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, and then spent the rest of his career in politically committed Italian cinema, refusing further genre work. He won Best Actor at both Cannes and Berlin and was a prominent figure on the Italian left.
