Denholm Elliott won three consecutive BAFTA awards for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for an Academy Award for A Room with a View.
He played Marcus Brody across two Indiana Jones films, and the character shifts from competent colleague to comic relief between them, which he handles without complaint.
Trading Places gives him a butler, and Defence of the Realm the dramatic work. He was a prisoner of war for three years after being shot down, and died of AIDS-related tuberculosis in 1992.
