David Tomlinson played Mr Banks in Mary Poppins, and the character’s arc from rigidity to kite-flying is the film’s actual subject. He also voiced the Absent-Minded Professor’s counterpart in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. He was an RAF pilot in the war and largely retired from acting in the 1980s.
