Catch-22 (1970)
Mike Nichols' 1970 Heller adaptation. Substantial source material that the film handles only partially.
Alan Arkin was nominated for his first film, The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming, and won Best Supporting Actor forty years later for Little Miss Sunshine.
Wait Until Dark gives him a genuinely frightening villain, and Catch-22 gives him Yossarian, carrying an adaptation most people considered unfilmable.
He came from Second City and The Committee, directed several films, and worked into his late eighties, including Argo and The Kominsky Method.
