Harakiri (1962)
Kobayashi's 1962 anti-samurai film. The most ruthless dismantling of bushido ever committed to film.
Akira Ishihama played the young samurai in Harakiri who is forced to disembowel himself with a bamboo blade, a sequence of sustained cruelty that establishes the film’s entire argument about the honour code. He worked in Japanese cinema for several decades in supporting parts.
