Most people who want a book have a date in mind before they have a manuscript: a conference, a retirement, a launch, a parent’s birthday. This calculator turns that date into a schedule. Pick the kind of book, the month you can start or the month you need it, and how you plan to publish, and it shows when each stage lands.
The numbers come from my current schedule. A ghostwritten book runs 4 to 8 months from first interview to final manuscript, and an AI-assisted book runs three to six months. Change a stage and the dates move with it.
What the calculator counts
It adds the stages end to end. The optional first stage is the Book Discovery Intensive, which takes 30 days and settles what the book is before anyone writes a chapter. Then comes the manuscript itself. Then publishing: four to six weeks through my publishing service, or 12 to 18 months from delivery to release with a traditional publisher.
Every stage is a range, and so is the answer. The quick end assumes interviews happen on schedule and drafts come back with comments within a few days. Real projects drift toward the slow end, which is why the deadline mode tells you to start early enough to cover it.
How far ahead should you start a book for a deadline?
Work back from the slow end of every stage. A book you need at a conference next fall, published through a traditional house, needed to start well over a year ago, and the calculator will say so plainly. Self-publishing is the route that fits a hard date, because the time between final manuscript and a book in hand is measured in weeks.
If the date is too close, three things buy time back: a shorter book, the self-publishing route, or an AI-assisted book with its shorter schedule. For the full picture of how a ghostwritten project runs, see my ghostwriting service.
