Arthur Barker Limited was a British publishing house active from the 1930s, best known in this library as the original publisher of Robert Graves's I, Claudius and Claudius the God in 1934 and 1935.
Both novels were commercial and critical successes on publication, winning the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Hawthornden Prize, and they established the historical novel narrated from inside the events as a durable commercial form.
The imprint was later absorbed into the Weidenfeld and Nicolson group. Its name survives largely on the copyright pages of the Graves editions and on a scattering of mid-century British fiction and nonfiction.
