If you want a library open at nine in the morning and still open at eight at night, in Clearwater, on four days of the week, this is the only one.
The Main Library downtown closes at seven at the latest and is shut both weekend days. Countryside runs ten to seven. The Beach branch opens three short afternoons. East Community opens at nine, runs to eight Monday through Thursday, and is open all day Saturday.
For anybody working ordinary hours, that difference is the whole argument.
What is Clearwater East Community Library?
A branch of the Clearwater Public Library System at 2465 Drew Street, on the front corner of Drew and Old Coachman, sharing a site with the St. Petersburg College Clearwater campus. The system phone is 727-562-4970 and the site is myclearwaterlibrary.com. One hundred and forty-four Google reviews at four point five.
It is a two-storey white building and it is comparatively new. Anybody who used the old East Clearwater branch will find this a considerable step up, and reviewers who remember the previous building say so directly: beautiful, very clean, and not crowded.
A navigation note that has caught people out for years. Mapping apps have at times pointed at the Student Services building at the back of the college campus, which is the wrong building. The library is the two-storey white one on the front corner at Drew and Old Coachman. If your app is taking you deep into the campus, you are going the wrong way.
Parking is free and there is plenty of it, which in a county where several branches share lots with something busier is worth stating.
The seed library
East Community runs a seed collection and it has genuine regulars.
One reviewer’s entire contribution was that he goes there every week to get seeds to grow in his yard, and that they are beautiful. That is a library service that turned into a habit, which is the highest compliment any service gets.
The mechanics are the same as a book. You take seeds, grow them, and ideally bring seed back from the plants at the end of the season. Countryside runs one as well, alongside its tool collection.
For a county with a growing season this long and a population this keen on gardening, a seed library is a better fit than it would be almost anywhere else in the country.
What else is in the building
The practical list, from people who use it: free parking, a small quiet atmosphere, internet access, movie rentals, filtered water, and step-free access throughout with room for a stroller or a wheelchair.
Friendly volunteers turn up in several reviews, and staff get named. One visitor wrote a whole review addressed to a staff member by name, thanking her for kindness, humility and a willingness to help, and saying it was clear she had a passion for helping people with their needs.
Children’s events run too. One family reported a great time at a dinosaur event and called the staff kind.
The college connection means the upstairs has the character of a study space during term, with the seating and desks that implies.
Why the hours matter more than anything else
Library service in this county is not short of buildings. It is short of buildings open when working people are free.
Across the Clearwater system, East Community is the answer to that. Nine to eight Monday through Thursday means you can go before work, at lunch, or after dinner. Nine to five on Saturday means a weekend visit is possible at all, which at the Main Library it is not.
If you need a room that is quiet, free, staffed and open late, the shortlist in this city is short. This branch, Countryside until seven, and the Barnes & Noble on US 19 until nine, and only one of those is free.

A library on a college campus
Sharing a site with St. Petersburg College produces one complication worth knowing.
The public library and the college library are separate services. A public library card gets you the public library. College library access runs on student enrolment and its own rules, and at least one student has found those rules stricter in person than the website suggested.
For a member of the public that distinction rarely matters. For a student, or somebody who assumed one card covers both, it does. Ask at the desk which service you are standing in.
Hours and getting there
Monday through Thursday from nine in the morning until eight at night. Friday nine until five. Saturday nine until five. Closed Sunday.
Six days, four late nights, and the earliest opening in the Clearwater system.
Drew Street runs east to west across Clearwater. The building is on the corner at Old Coachman, front of the campus, not the back. Free parking on site.
From the beaches or downtown Clearwater it is a straight run east on Drew. Emerald City Comics is a few minutes south and open until eight most nights, which makes for an easy pairing.
Where it sits
Clearwater runs five branches on one card and they are genuinely different buildings.
The Main Library downtown has the roof terrace and the water views and closes at weekends. Countryside has the tools, the seeds and the bookable rooms. North Greenwood is the newest and the most photogenic. Clearwater Beach is tiny and open three short afternoons.
East Community is the workhorse. Not the prettiest and not the most talked about, but open when you need it, free to park at, quiet, and running a seed library that people build their week around.
