By every measure a library gets judged on, this is the smallest operation in Pinellas County, and the people who use it write about it as though it were the best thing on the island.
One of them put it plainly: a wonderful resource for the Clearwater Beach community, with workshops, a historical series, craft activities and awesome people, and said not to miss going.
What is Clearwater Beach Library?
A branch of the Clearwater Public Library System at 69 Bay Esplanade on Clearwater Beach, sharing a site with the beach recreation complex. Calls go to the city system line, 727-562-4970, and the catalogue sits at myclearwaterlibrary.com. Sixteen Google reviews at four point four.
It is small. That is the defining fact and nobody who reviews it pretends otherwise.
What it has instead of size is the location. The back windows look out over the intracoastal, which one visitor flagged as a reason to go, and it sits alongside a swimming pool, a gym and tennis courts. If you hold a city recreation card the pool entry drops considerably.
Books can be requested online and collected here, since the branch runs on the same card and the same Pinellas Public Library Cooperative catalogue as everywhere else in the county. That is what makes a branch this size viable at all: the collection on the shelf is the smallest part of what it can get you.
The parking problem
The city eliminated the parking lot.
One regular raised it directly, praised the staff and the facility in the same breath, and then recommended arriving by bike.
That is the single most useful piece of practical information about this branch. Clearwater Beach parking is expensive, crowded and entirely built around beach visitors instead of a library run. If you are driving over specifically, plan for that. If you are already on the island, walk or cycle.
The flip side is that for anybody living on the beach, this is a library within walking distance, which is a rarer thing than it sounds.
What runs there
More than you would guess from three afternoons.
There is a summer crafts series, and a participant thanked the staff member who ran it by name, describing thoughtfulness and effort across every session. There are workshops. There is a historical series, which for a barrier island with the history Clearwater Beach has is a better idea than it might sound elsewhere.
One reviewer described it as a great location for children, adults and families, with plenty of activities, and advised checking the schedule online because there is generally something on.
Staff get named here more often per review than at any other branch in the county, which is what happens in a small room where the same person is behind the desk every time you come.
Who it is for
Residents of Clearwater Beach, first and obviously.
Then anybody with a recreation card using the pool, the gym or the courts, since the library is part of the same complex and the timing works.
And then a narrower group worth naming: people who want to read with a water view and do not want to buy anything to sit down. The beach has no shortage of places to sit if you are willing to spend fifteen dollars. It has exactly one where you are not.
For a longer working session, the mainland branches are the better answer. East Community runs to eight four nights and Countryside to seven, both with parking.
Hours and getting there
Closed Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday from ten in the morning until two in the afternoon. Thursday from noon until four. Closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Ten hours a week across three days, and the Thursday slot starts at a different time from the other two, which is exactly the sort of thing that produces a wasted trip. Check before you go, every time.
Bay Esplanade is on the north end of Clearwater Beach. No library parking lot. Bike, walk, or work out the beach parking situation in advance.
Where it sits
The Clearwater system runs five branches and this is the outlier.
The Main Library downtown has the roof terrace and shuts at weekends. East Community has the widest hours. Countryside lends tools and seeds. North Greenwood is the newest and the best-looking.
Clearwater Beach is the one that exists because an island needs a library even when the numbers do not obviously support one. Ten hours a week, a view of the water, a craft series, and sixteen people who went out of their way to say it matters.
That is a reasonable use of public money and a better argument for branch libraries than any policy paper.
