Greenwood Press is an American academic and reference publisher founded in 1967, specialising in scholarly monographs, reference works, and library-market titles across history, the social sciences, and the humanities.
It is now part of ABC-CLIO, and the combined operation is a substantial presence in the academic library market.
Its most consequential single title in this library is Alfred W. Crosby's The Columbian Exchange, published in 1972 after the author had considerable difficulty placing it with anybody, because publishers could not categorise a work that was neither conventional history nor biology. The book named a field and is now foundational, which is a reasonable argument for the value of academic presses willing to take an uncategorisable manuscript.
