Joe Russo works exclusively as a co-director with his brother Anthony, and the pair are effectively a single credit. They began in independent film with Welcome to Collinwood, moved into television comedy, and were hired by Marvel after directing episodes of Community that parodied action cinema.
The Winter Soldier is the film that changed their standing. It is a paranoid thriller about institutional infiltration that happens to feature a superhero, and it reset expectations for what the series could be. Infinity War and Endgame then closed a twenty-two film arc, and Endgame briefly became the highest-grossing film ever released.
Their strength is coordination at scale instead of a distinct visual signature, which is why the Marvel films work and why their independent projects since have struggled to find the same footing.
