Director: John Ford

John Ford won Best Director four times, more than anyone, and made Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, My Darling Clementine and The Searchers. He shot Monument Valley so consistently that it became shorthand for the American West itself. He also filmed combat at Midway, where he was wounded, and his depiction of Native Americans moved across his career from stock antagonists to the sympathy of Cheyenne Autumn.
