James S. A. Corey is the joint pen name of American novelists Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, authors of The Expanse, the nine-book science fiction series that redefined modern space opera and was adapted into the Emmy-nominated television series of the same name. The name is built from Abraham's middle name (James), Franck's middle name (Corey), and the initials of Abraham's daughter (S.A.). It is also meant to echo the byline conventions of the 1970s space opera writers the duo grew up reading.
Abraham (born November 14, 1969 in Albuquerque, New Mexico) was already an established fantasy novelist when the collaboration began, best known for The Long Price Quartet and The Dagger and the Coin series. He also writes urban fantasy under the pen name M. L. N. Hanover. Franck (born May 18, 1969 in Portland, Oregon, full name Ty Corey Franck) had worked as personal assistant to George R. R. Martin and developed a tabletop role-playing game set in a near-future solar system. That game became the seed for The Expanse.
Leviathan Wakes (2011) launched the series and was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel and the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel. The series ran across nine main novels through Leviathan Falls (2021), plus a string of novellas and short stories, and was named in the Hugo Award for Best Series. The Expanse novels were adapted into the Syfy and Amazon Prime television series The Expanse (2015 to 2022), with both Abraham and Franck serving as writers and producers on the show.
Together they have also written Honor Among Thieves (2014), a Star Wars novel in the Empire and Rebellion line, and have launched a new trilogy beginning with The Mercy of Gods (2024), kicking off The Captive's War, a science fiction series described by the authors as the Book of Daniel reimagined as space opera. Both authors live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and continue to write together.
