Jean-Pierre Léaud was fourteen in The 400 Blows and played Antoine Doinel across five films for François Truffaut over twenty years, which is one of cinema’s longest continuous character studies.

The final freeze frame of The 400 Blows, staring directly at the camera, is among the most reproduced images in film history.

He also worked extensively for Godard, and became the face of the entire French New Wave. The Mother and the Whore gives him his most exposed performance.
