Jean-Louis Trintignant won Best Actor at Cannes for Z and appeared in The Conformist, A Man and a Woman and Amour, the last at eighty-one playing a husband caring for his dying wife. He was a serious racing driver who competed at Le Mans, and his career was marked by long absences after personal tragedy.
