Bernadette Lafont appeared in Truffaut’s first short and became a fixture of the French New Wave, working with Chabrol, Truffaut and Eustache. The Mother and the Whore gives her one of three leads in a film that runs three and a half hours on conversation. She won a César for La Fiancée du Pirate.
