Thomas Alan Shippey, born in 1943, is a British scholar of medieval literature, Anglo-Saxon England, and modern fantasy and science fiction, and he is widely considered one of the world's leading academic authorities on the works of J. R. R. Tolkien.
Shippey held academic posts that closely echoed Tolkien's own, including the chair of English at the University of Leeds that Tolkien had once occupied, and later a professorship at Saint Louis University. This shared grounding in philology gave him unusual insight into Tolkien's methods and sources.
His books on Tolkien, including The Road to Middle-earth and J.R.R. Tolkien: Author of the Century, are regarded as essential scholarship, explaining how Tolkien's professional study of language and early literature shaped the creation of Middle-earth.
Beyond Tolkien, Shippey has written and edited widely on Old English literature, science fiction, and the fantastic, and he served as a consultant on film adaptations of Tolkien's work. He is valued for combining deep learning with clear, engaging explanation.
