Metropolitan Books is an imprint of Henry Holt and Company, part of Macmillan, publishing serious nonfiction with a particular emphasis on politics, history, current affairs, and social criticism.
The imprint has a reputation for taking argumentative and uncomfortable books, and its list includes work that other trade houses considered too critical or too specialised for a general readership.
It published Atul Gawande's The Checklist Manifesto in 2009 and Being Mortal in 2014, both of which became bestsellers and both of which changed practice in the fields they addressed, which is a rare thing for a trade nonfiction title to achieve.
