Summary of Transcript

Richard Lowe: Hello, and welcome to Leaders and Their Stories! I’m Richard Lowe, The Writing King, and today I have a great guest with me, Martin Ricketts, a marketing expert and a master of technology and productivity. Martin, why don’t you introduce yourself?

Martin Ricketts: Thanks, Richard! I appreciate the kind words. I like that you call me a marketing genius, but honestly, I’ve stumbled my way through it over the past 30 years, predicting technology trends and marketing strategies. I’ve often been too early, but hey, that’s part of the game!

Richard Lowe: I know exactly what you mean! Now, you came in with a list of topics to discuss. Why don’t we dive into the first one?

Martin Ricketts: In today’s digital age, or what I like to call the age of cognitive augmentation, entrepreneurs must master the art of capturing, storing, retrieving, and deploying information. One of the best tools for managing this process is Google Keep.

Google Keep is part of Google Workspace, but even if you don’t have a paid account, it’s free with a basic Google account. The reason I love it is that it provides the lowest-friction way to capture ideas. With just a couple of taps, you can store notes, lists, pictures, or even voice memos.

Everything syncs automatically across devices, so you don’t have to think about saving or backing up. And when you need that information later, it’s right there. Productivity is about reducing friction, and Google Keep does that well.

Richard Lowe: That sounds like a really useful productivity tool. I can see how I could integrate that into my writing process, especially when researching books or potential clients. Which brings us to our next point: making technology solutions frictionless. How do you do that?

Martin Ricketts: Great question! One of the biggest ways to reduce friction is by using voice typing. And I’m not just talking about asking Siri or Google a question. I mean replacing typing entirely.

Instead of typing a comment in a tiny social media box, I use Dictanote, a lightweight text editor that integrates with Voice-In Typing, a Chrome extension. It allows me to dictate my thoughts quickly and accurately.

A few must-have tools to streamline your workflow: Voice-In Typing and Dictanote for replacing typing with voice in nearly any text box, Clipboard History for saving commonly used phrases, email addresses, and website links, Change Case for switching between title case, uppercase, or lowercase with simple shortcuts, and Grammarly as an AI-powered proofreader that’s now integrated into virtually every app.

Richard Lowe: That makes a lot of sense. I started using Dragon Dictate years ago, but it was terrible. Microsoft Word’s built-in dictation tool is far better. And the biggest change I had to make? Learning to enunciate.

Martin Ricketts: Many people say “voice typing doesn’t work for me,” but the real issue is slurring words. It’s like speaking with marbles in your mouth. The AI can’t understand you.

One of the best investments you can make is improving your speech clarity, whether through acting exercises or even Toastmasters. Better enunciation means better voice-to-text accuracy and better communication skills overall.

Richard Lowe: Toastmasters is great for that. Plus, clear speech helps in networking, presentations, and even daily conversations.

AI as a Digital Assistant, Not a Replacement

Richard Lowe: Now, let’s talk about AI. I use it in my writing work, but not as a writing tool. It’s a digital assistant.

If I’m writing a book, I don’t let AI generate the content. I use it for research, flow analysis, and fact-checking. If I’m analyzing a client’s brand, AI helps summarize key points and find inconsistencies. If I need business insights, AI provides suggestions, but I always verify them because AI hallucinates sometimes.

AI enhances your work. It doesn’t replace expertise.

Martin Ricketts: I always say: AI, Human, AI, Human. That means you create the original draft, AI helps summarize, refine, or format, then you refine again and add personality and final polish.

Most importantly, focus on learning good prompts rather than jumping between AI tools.

Best AI Tools for Business and Marketing

Martin Ricketts: Here are four AI tools I recommend for business owners and marketers. ChatGPT-4 is best for summarization and refining content. Perplexity Pro is best for deep research and fact-checking. Notebook LM, Google’s AI Notebook, stores and references your own documents for personalized AI responses. And Notebook LM Studio creates an AI-generated podcast summarizing key findings from your research.

Each AI tool serves a different purpose, and using them strategically is key.

Richard Lowe: That’s a solid breakdown. A bit of trivia: Elon Musk’s “Grok” AI takes its name from Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A. Heinlein. In the book, “grok” means deep, intuitive understanding.

Martin Ricketts: That’s awesome! Musk definitely has a quirky way of naming things.

Richard Lowe: Speaking of tech nostalgia, if you want a fun AI movie from the 1970s, check out Colossus: The Forbin Project. It’s about a mountain-sized AI computer, using punch cards and magnetic tape, that takes control of the world. It’s hilarious by today’s standards, but surprisingly accurate in predicting AI’s potential.
