William Atherton played Walter Peck in Ghostbusters and Richard Thornburg in Die Hard, two characters of such calculated obnoxiousness that he has described being genuinely harassed in public over them.
The Sugarland Express gave him a lead for Steven Spielberg’s first theatrical feature, and Day of the Locust gave him a serious dramatic role. He came from Broadway and has continued to work steadily in television.
