I left California in 2013 looking for somewhere quieter and a little out of the way, and Florida’s Gulf Coast fit. I’m Richard Lowe, a ghostwriter based in Safety Harbor. I’ve authored 113+ books under my own name and ghostwritten 54+ more, and I write for people all over this state and well past it. Some of them meet me for lunch. Some I’ve only ever heard on the phone.

How did Florida handle Hurricane Milton?
Better than you’d believe. I’ve lived through four significant hurricanes here, Category 1 or stronger, and two stand out: Irma in 2017 and Milton in 2024. Milton hit close to home. These were serious, destructive storms. What stayed with me was the aftermath. Before Milton even made landfall, tens of thousands of utility trucks and line crews were staged at the state line, fueled and waiting for the all-clear.
The moment it was safe, they rolled in. Power and internet came back fast, and a state that had just taken a Category 3 hit was working again far quicker than a disaster that size should allow. Florida takes the hard things seriously and gets them done. I came out of it prouder to live here.

Do you work with clients across Florida?
Yes. Interviews run by phone or Zoom, so Miami, Orlando, Jacksonville and towns most people couldn’t find on a map all work the same way. Around Tampa Bay, clients can meet me in person, over lunch at Poblanos Mexican Grill (2451 N McMullen Booth Rd, Clearwater; book a free call to set it up) or the Safety Harbor Resort & Spa, with working sessions at the Safety Harbor Public Library. Most of my local clients are memoir clients, and a lot of them are people who retired here from somewhere else.
How would a Florida book project work?
Anywhere in the state, it’s the same process: a free call, an hour-long kickoff, then a run of recorded interviews. You get a written summary after each session, approve an outline, and read chapters one at a time as they’re finished. Most books take four to eight months, and your part is roughly 20 to 40 hours. Yes. Florida’s technology, healthcare and aerospace businesses produce stories that need a writer who knows the ground. A lot of my work is with people who did something real elsewhere and moved here. I wrote about them in you retired here with a life behind you. For finished books there’s getting into a bookstore and the bookstores of this coast. For the state’s literary history, there’s the house where Kerouac died.
