The Client
The author of this project had a personal history deeply connected to social justice but was driven by a greater cause: to tell the untold story of Black people in the United States. They weren’t just seeking to write another historical or sociological account; they wanted to present a new lens through which to view racial dynamics. They wanted to explore history, truth, and racial divisions in a way that hadn’t been done before — and to do so with a bold voice.
The author had spent years compiling historical facts, personal experiences, and racial commentary, but needed someone to help organize, frame, and polish the material into a compelling, readable narrative.
The Journey
We began by working together on developing a clear structure for the book, which needed to be accessible but also academic in tone. Through deep interviews and extensive review of their historical research, we built a narrative that flowed chronologically from the origins of Black people in North America, through slavery, segregation, and the modern racial divide in the U.S.
Each chapter was a blend of historical fact and critical analysis. The client’s commentary on how these histories impacted the present day allowed the reader to connect deeper and think critically about the evolution of racial injustice.
The Finished Book
This is a unique and thought-provoking examination of racial history, told through a fresh perspective. It isn’t a law book, psychology textbook, or sociology report. Instead, it blends history, personal experience, and social commentary to tell a larger story of race over seven centuries.
The book’s conversational tone makes it approachable for a wide audience while still providing in-depth historical analysis that can serve as a teaching tool for both students and adults.
