Doubleday is an American publishing house founded in 1897 by Frank Nelson Doubleday, in partnership at various times with figures including Samuel McClure and Walter Hines Page. It grew into one of the largest and most prominent publishers in the United States over the course of the twentieth century.
Throughout its history Doubleday published an enormous range of fiction and nonfiction, becoming home to many bestselling and critically acclaimed authors. It was known for both its commercial reach and its literary list, and operated influential book clubs that brought books to millions of readers.
The house published works across virtually every category, from popular fiction and thrillers to serious literary and historical works. Its editors and imprints shaped American publishing for generations.
Now an imprint of Penguin Random House, Doubleday continues to publish prominent fiction and nonfiction. Its long and storied history makes it one of the most recognizable names in American book publishing.
