Audrey Niffenegger, born in 1963, is an American writer, visual artist, and academic best known for her debut novel, The Time Traveler's Wife. Trained as a printmaker and book artist, she brings a strong visual sensibility to her fiction.
The Time Traveler's Wife, published in 2003, tells the story of a man with a genetic disorder that pulls him uncontrollably through time and the wife who loves him across the resulting disjointed chronology. It became an international bestseller and was adapted into both a feature film and a television series.
Her later novel, Her Fearful Symmetry, set around London's Highgate Cemetery, explored twins, ghosts, and inheritance. She has also created acclaimed illustrated works and visual novels, including The Three Incestuous Sisters and The Adventuress, reflecting her background in fine art.
Niffenegger has taught writing and book arts at the college level and continues to work across both literature and the visual arts.
