M Night Shyamalan directed The Sixth Sense at twenty-nine and its ending made him famous in a way that has been a burden since. Every subsequent film has been watched for a twist, which has flattened how his actual strengths get discussed.
Those strengths are patience and framing. He holds shots, keeps information at the edge of the composition and directs children unusually well. Unbreakable and Signs both work on tension instead of on their reveals.
The middle period, The Happening and The Last Airbender, was a critical collapse. Split and The Visit, made cheaply for Blumhouse, restored his standing.
