The Client
One of my earliest ghostwriting clients was a technology executive leading a major digital transformation effort. He didn’t want a dry instruction manual. He wanted a story — a compelling, readable book that mirrored The Phoenix Project — to show how a fictional company makes the shift from chaotic waterfall methods to high-functioning Agile.
He had the experience. He had the framework. But he needed a storyteller to bring it all together.
The Journey
Together, we outlined a full narrative arc: a mid-size company on the brink of collapse, stuck in silos and drowning in missed deadlines. The protagonist — a newly appointed manager — is tasked with fixing the chaos.
Through weekly interviews and deep collaboration, I shaped a business novel that embedded Agile practices, Scrum sprints, sprint planning, retrospectives, and real-world problems into the character-driven story. Each chapter tackled a key aspect of the Agile transition, with friction, breakthroughs, and team growth baked into the plot.
The book wasn’t just instructional — it was relatable.
The Finished Book
The result was a 45,000-word novel that read like fiction but taught like a masterclass.
It walked readers through the pain of project failures, the skepticism of senior staff, and the eventual wins that come with true Agile adoption. It made the process human — not theoretical. And that made all the difference.
Afterward
Though the client remained anonymous in publication, the book became a lasting internal training tool — reducing onboarding time, aligning teams, and reinforcing the “why” behind the change. It proved that storytelling can be a powerful vehicle for change.
Impact
- ► Distributed internally at the client’s company to onboard new team members
- ► Used externally as a credibility asset in consulting and partner meetings
- ► Sparked conversations with other companies exploring Agile
- ► Helped solidify the client’s positioning as a transformation leader
Impact Summary
Sometimes a technical manual won’t move hearts or shift culture — but a story will. This business novel helped a company make the leap from waterfall to Agile by making the process feel real, urgent, and achievable.
