Ernest Lehman wrote North by Northwest, Sweet Smell of Success, West Side Story and The Sound of Music, and was nominated six times without winning, receiving an honorary Academy Award in 2001. North by Northwest was written as an original with the deliberate aim of being the Hitchcock picture to end all Hitchcock pictures.
