The University Press of Virginia, now the University of Virginia Press, was founded in 1963 and publishes scholarly work across history, literature, architecture, African American studies, and the environment, with particular strength in early American history and in the papers of the founders.
Its willingness to publish work that mainstream academic presses considered professionally risky is the reason it appears in this library.
It published Ian Stevenson's Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation in 1966, the founding volume of four decades of case collection by the chair of psychiatry at the university's own medical school. Publishing it was a decision with institutional consequences, and the press stood behind the work through several subsequent volumes.
