G. P. Putnam's Sons is an American publisher founded in New York in 1838 by George Palmer Putnam, and is among the oldest continuously operating publishing houses in the United States.
Its historical catalog includes Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, and a long list of nineteenth and twentieth century American writers, and in its modern form it publishes commercial fiction and nonfiction as an imprint of Penguin Random House.
It published the English-language edition of Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods in 1969, which sold in the tens of millions and founded the ancient astronaut genre, an outcome that says a good deal about the commercial instincts of trade publishing in that period.
